** DUELING CLUSTERS: HP, DEC HIT THE ROAD THIS WEEK
(DNR, 3/1/93, pg. 1)
HP will unveil the industry's first disaster-tolerant RISC based
computing cluster software. SharePlex/IX runs on all of the HP3000 systems.
DEC is expected to brief analysts on its Alpha and mixed VAX/Alpha cluster
support within OpenVMS. Despite DEC's and HP's claims and counterclaims,
observers note that the HP technology does have an audience.
[ Editors note: For more information on HP's offering, check the CSY Hotline
subject SHARE.]
249.
** DATA TOPICS
(EN, 3/8/93, pg. 14)
DEC dropped a plan put in place last fall to sell bundled clusters of its Alpha
machines and VXT 2000 X Window terminals. The company hoped to emulate
HP's successful packaging of its X terminals and PA-RISC workstations, but
the inclusion of full systems mandated by DEC's focus on replacing character
terminals in commercial networks made the plan too unwieldy. DEC realized
that no two customers wanted the same Alpha configuration.
250.
** MENTOR UNVEILS JOINTLY DEVELOPED SOFTWARE
(EN, 3/8/93, pg. 10)
Mentor unveiled software it developed with DEC and revealed a host of
cooperative arrangements with other companies. PowerDM is a technology
program that supports a common information model based on CFI (CAD
Framework Initiative). DEC will support the software on its platforms and
those of Sun, HP and IBM.
251.
** DEC's OLTP SOFTWARE OPENS TO OSF/1, NT SERVERS
(CW, 3/8/93, pg. 2)
DEC will be targeting the open systems on line transaction processing market
later this month with announcement of the OSF/1 and Windows NT server
support for its Application Control and Management System (ACMS). Analyst
say that DEC will need to run ACMS on non-DEC platforms, such as those
from HP and clearly target markets if it is to make any impact outside of its
existing base.
252.
** DEC ALPHA AXP 3000/400 FINALLY, A COMPETITIVE UNIX
SYSTEM FROM DIGITAL.
(SW, 3/93, pg. 74)
Users agreed it was a very fast compute box, and were impressed with graphics
performance, too. Problems related to conversion from a 32-bit to a 64-bit were
ultimately traced to poor programming practices. Programmers should expect a
few headaches.
[ Editors note: Generally very favorable towards the DEC system. Chart
compares the Alpha AXP to the HP 710 with the DEC system outperforming
HP using x11 graphics performance in graphics, text, and windows. ]
253.
** DEC TO RESELL OBJECT-ORIENTED 4GL
(CW, 3/1/93, pg. 7)
DEC plans to resell an object-oriented 4GL created by a start-up, Forte
Software, that has the potential to significantly advance the development of
distributed client/server applications across heterogeneous environment. The
environment will allow developers to write applications in logical components
that can be deployed independently of the physical environment they were
intended to run in. As a result, any process can be partitioned to run on a peer
to-peer basis in any client or server system based on the requirements of the
applications.
254.
** DEC TO HELP USERS TRACK LICENSES
(CW, 3/1/93, pg. 16)
DEC is expected this week to announce a plan to work with other vendors of
software access control technology to ease software management across
multivendor systems.

** TECHNOLOGY ANALYSIS: HP's OPENVIEW A BIT PRICEY BUT
HIGHLY FLEXIBLE
(CW, 3/8/93, pg. 110)
Rated by 3 industry reviewers, 5 users and 1 industry analyst. Overall value:
The products are very value-priced. You would have to buy two or three
applications from other vendors to get the equivalent functionality Open View
gives you off the shelf.
[ Editors note: Generally favorable to HP's product.]
256.
** HP GETS SERIOUS ABOUT PCs, WINS SOME INDUSTRY RESPECT
(CW, 3/1/93, pg. 39)
HP had 150% unit growth and 88% revenue growth in the torrid second half of
last year. Analyst cited HP's aggressive attitude toward pricing, a high-quality
product line and an ability to deliver its products in a market wrenched by
shortages.
257.
** HP WINS $3 MILLION OIL INDUSTRY UNIX CONTRACT
(UGX, 3/8/93, pg. 6)
HP's Russian subsidiary has finalized a $3 million contract with the oil
enterprise ASUNEFT, Nizniy Vartosk, northern Siberia. The company's
Moscow office will coordinate the supply of a 700 terminal Unix based system
to be used in oil field data acquisition.
[ Editors note: Congratulations HP Moscow.]

** ES/9000s GATHERING SPEED AT HIGH END
(CW, 3/1/93, pg. 55)
Two years after its introduction , there were only about 3,600 ES/9000s
installed. Of all the low end 4300s, only 11% were replaced by ES/9000s with
the rest going to other platforms. Of the larger 4381s, only 19% were replaced
with ES/9000s.
[ Editors note: Less than 20% of IBM's installed mainframe base is going back
for more of the same. ]
259.
** IBM SELLING OF SOFTWARE TO RAISE CASH, CUT COSTS
(CW, 3/8/93, pg. 1)
IBM has sold two of its software packages to third party vendors. Observers
see the deals as an indication that IBM may sell other software inventory to cut
support costs, reduce head count and raise cash. MAPICS, IBM's
manufacturing package for the AS/400 was sold to Marcam and CICS Problem
Determination/MVS was sold to Compuware Corp.
[ Editors note: Use this for FUD. If IBM transfers the responsibility of on
going maintenance and support for an application software product to another
company, what guarantee does a prospect have for continued support?]
260.
** IBM ENLISTS FIRMS TO HELP DISTRIBUTE ITS CHIPS MORE
WIDELY
(WSJ, 3/4/93, pg. B6)
Signing several independent distributors, IBM accelerated its attempt to become
a major seller of semiconductors to other companies. IBM is one of the biggest
semiconductor makers in the world, but until recently it used its entire output
only in IBM products.
261.
** IBM WILL PAY THE US GOVERNMENT $14.8 MILLION TO SETTLE
FALSE CLAIMS CHARGE
(WSJ, 3/5/93, pg. A3)
IBM will pay the US government $14.8 million to settle a potential False
Claims Act civil suit. The computer giant admitted to providing reconditioned
or remanufactured equipment, instead of new gear, to the government. IBM
also settled allegations that it violated the Buy America Act by misidentifying
the country of origin of various products sold to the US government.
262.
** IBM FLESHES OUT THE DETAILS OF ITS RIOS 2 HIGH-END RISC
(UGX, 3/8/93, pg. 4)
IBM machines based on the forthcoming high end RIOS 2 multi chip set could
be on the market by the middle of this year. The new chip is described as a
next-generation super scalar RISC with single branch, dual fixed point and dual
floating point units. An IBM source said it would be interesting to see how HP,
currently winning the performance race over RIOS with its PA7100 chip, will
react to the announcement.
[ Editors note: Appears that HP is setting the mark. IBM agrees that HP
currently has a superior chip.]
263.
** IBM UK MOVES INTO MAIL ORDER WITH OPEN OPTIONS
CATALOG
(UGX, 3/8/93, pg. 4)
IBM became the first in Europe to publish an Open Options Catalog of IBM
and third party products available through mail order. The 64-page catalog,
with price list, offers products from 19 manufacturers, and promises 72 hours
delivery for most product lines.
264.
** THE ANTENNA
(EN, 3/8/93, pg. 4)
The PowerPC powers that be - IBM, Motorola, and Apple - set up a new
organization for recruiting other vendors to support and use the emerging RISC
architecture now being described on a grander scale as the PowerOpen
Environment.
265.
** WHAT THEY'RE SAYING. NO QUICK FIXES FOR IBM
(CW, 3/8/93, pg. 6)
The next generation PowerPC RISC microprocessor being developed by IBM,
Apple and Motorola should have been used to give the RS/6000 a greater
technological shot in the arm and accelerate IBM's OEM revenue opportunities.
As for Q1 projections, an analyst expects IBM to post at least a 45 cent-per-
share loss on 13% lower revenues compared to the profitable Q192.

266.
** COMMENTS
(UGX, 3/8/93, pg. 8)
NCR has released version 2.1 of Cooperation, its integrated software
environment, for client/server environments. It runs on System 3000 machines
and personal computers clients. It supports Windows 3.1, Lotus Notes and HP
NewWave 4.1.

267.
** Q & A SUN OFFICIALS FACE USERS
(SO, 3/93, pg. 18)
Regarding the quality software program, what specifically does Sun plan to do
to reduce the large number of bugs and patches in its OS and layered products?
Why can't you get drivers to go with the OS on Sun-supported equipment?
[ Editors note: These questions and more point out that Sun has some major
quality and satisfaction problems. Good article if your competing against Sun.]
268.
** COMMENTS
(UGX, 3/8/93, pg. 8)
There's a rumor doing the rounds that SunSoft is interested in acquiring Santa
Cruz Operation Inc.

** UNIX INTERNATIONAL VP BLASTS WINDOWS NT PLATFORMS
(SO, 3/93, pg. 11)
A number of reasons why Unix is superior to NT include: Unix has been around
for a good number of years , an a lot of large companies have put money in to
making it a viable commercial operating system, it has excellent functionality
in multitasking , it has capabilities in networking which provides the vehicle
for an excellent client-server model - and Unix is the vehicle to do that.
[ Editors note: If you are competing against NT, use this article to explain why
Unix is the better choice. ]
270.
** COSI SUFFERS CRISIS OF CONFIDENCE
(UGX, 3/8/93, pg. 1)
An initiative which seems to be suffering from a bout of collective cold feet is
the Common Operating System Interface effort sponsored by IBM and HP. The pro-
liferation of industry alliances and more recent consolidation is said to have
induced a state of panic at the two firms about the logic of what they are tryin
trying to achieve with COSI - bandied in some quarters as Systems Application
Architecture II - and whether there are sound business reasons behind it.
271.
** ANOTHER 3,000 JOBS TO GO AT BULL
(UGX, 3/8/93, pg. 3)
Bull is looking to cut another 3,000 jobs for its global payroll of about 35,000
Bull blames the world economic slowdown, price wars in the personal computer
market segment and the effects of structural changes in the industry - but those
problems also affected HP and NCR, both of which managed to remain
profitable and to grow in 1991.
272.
** OSF RECEIVES FUNDING PLEDGE
(CW, 3/8/93, pg. 24)
OSF last week reached an agreement with its key vendor sponsors for funding
through 1994 and 1995. IBM, HP, DEC and Hitachi Data Systems have each
agreed to provide $5 million per year for the next two years.
273.
** INTERGRAPH STRATEGY SHIFT TAGS CLIPPER NT, LOW-END
(EN, 3/8/93, pg. 1)
Intergraph plans to enter the generic hardware business after making Windows
NT available on its Clipper based workstations, ending the company' policy of
only selling machines in combination with its design software. Intergraph plans
to more than triple Clipper speeds over the next two years, largely through
denser packaging.
274.
** SIEMENS TO MARKET PYRAMID SYSTEMS IN EUROPE
(EN, 3/8/93, pg. 15)
Siemens-Nixdorf will assume direct marketing activities in Continental Europe
for high-end 32-bit systems produced by Pyramid Technology Corp.
